i'm in love with my new floors. i'm so glad i took the leap and went a little unconventional. these floors are tough and i think they will make a great surface in a house that entertains many people under the age of 5, at least in the durability department anyways.
this was a tedious job and the guys that installed the floors did an amazing job, 200 square feet of brick in a herringbone pattern.
thankfully the transition between the wood floors and the brick is seamless.
i like the brick so much i'm going to use it in my downstairs bathroom in the future. that will be a much smaller project.
next up: sofa, pillows made of vintage fabrics and grain sacks, seagrass rug, my rooster prints i bought back in april from the rose bowl. i'm so excited, can't wait!
happy monday!
TO. DIE. FOR.
ReplyDeleteI think I might be as excited as you are!!!! Seriously...I adore it!!! Love the herringbone pattern, love the color of the brick...maybe because it looks like my front walkway. It looks so pretty in the room with the white built ins and those wonderful sconces. The walls look like painted white brick too?? Can't wait to see it furnished!! You must be so thrilled!

Really like your new floor. We have the laminate in brick for the kitchen. And my Scottie dog doesn't even scratch it. Definitely one of my favorite floor looks for our old country house. Next would be the river rock like the thin bricks for the fireplace, around the tall foundation and on the breezeway walls. Lots of dreams here.
ReplyDeletebeautiful! congrats! can't wait to see the floors in person...
ReplyDeleteWow Amber...I just love it so much!

Absolutely STUNNING! :-D
ReplyDeleteThank you for linking to me! Appreciate it and I've lived with the floors for over a year now and still love them as much as when I wrote this post! I'm considering installing in my kitchen now at this point :)
DeleteA MA Zing, really really pretty!!
ReplyDeleteWowza! I love it. Gorgeous.
ReplyDeleteI LOVE it! We are purchasing an older home with wood throughout but the kitchen and bathrooms are old vinyl. Putting this on the list of possibilities! I'm a new like and found you through The Lettered Cottage. :)
ReplyDeleteI love them and I'm thinking of installing them in my kitchen now. I have very dark wood floors now, which are beautiful when they're clean but it's like having a black sweater on the floor, they show every tiny crumb and grain of dirt. Good luck!
DeleteI would NEVER think to use brick inside my house, and I just love it!
ReplyDeleteisn't that going to be a pain to clean between the bricks??
ReplyDeleteNope, not a pain. I've lived with the floors for over a year at this point and they are the easist floors as far as maintenance goes.
Deletei LOVE this!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteHow were they installed? In concrete? If so, what is under the concrete to support it?
ReplyDeleteHi Linda,
DeleteMy house has a concrete slab foundation. It's been a while so I had to go back to see what is under the brick (don't remember!). From my comments to others when we were working on this project, this is what I think happened. The room initially had carpet. The carpet was pulled up, tack strips were removed. They scraped all the adhesive that was left behind from the carpet and applied some kind of barrier, if you look at the post before this one you will see it is flourescent pink! Then the applied thinset, the bricks, and then grout between the bricks. If you'd like the specifics on the pink stuff email me at thegirliscraftee@gmail.com and I'll see if I can find out for you.
Curious...were these brick tiles or regular bricks? Love this look and looking at options for the kitchen in our new house.
ReplyDeleteWe used a product called "Thinbrick". They are acutally bricks but they are only 1/2 and inch thick, often used as a brick veneer. They are all clay, come in a variety of colors and textures. Made by Robinson Brick. If you search under home projects, I did a post about the bricks.
DeleteI absolutely love your floors! We are looking at putting some in our house and I can't find too much information on them. I know you can't give me exacts, but how does price compare to tile, or such, in rooms. We are going with a nice laminate over a wood for price reasons, just to give you an idea of what I am working with. Would you say this is more of an upscale project?
ReplyDeleteHi Liz, this was a bit of a splurge for us. I'm not familiar with how much other flooring costs. I didn't consider other flooring because this is what I wanted and if we were going to make a change this was the only option. I had to buy these special bricks because they had to butt up to my wood floors which were only 1/2" thick max and I wanted a smooth transition. If you don't have that concern you could find free brick on Craigslist (here in CA there are tons of people just giving it away) and have your installer cut each brick so it's thinner and to get more square footage out of it. If I had to guess I would say the labor aspect of this project is probably similar to tile. The process to install wasn't that different! If you're handy, you could potentially do this for almost free if you could lay the brick yourself and get the brick for free. Hope this helps!
DeleteIm looking at the Robinson brick company sight. Which did you choose? IS it the trainstation? english pub? Please help...
ReplyDeleteNo problem, we used Townsquare :)
DeleteI love the design of flooring project shown above. It definitely completes the overall appearance of the space. This does not only make the room more cozy and attractive but this also adds protection to the base flooring. Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteIs this product rated for flooring? We are only seeing wall installation instructions? Are you just brave? :)
ReplyDeleteYes, I'm just brave! It was one of those things that was either going to be a disaster or great. I stressed out about it a lot! BUT it turned out great and I'm glad I did it :)
DeleteLove your room! We are renovating a home and just laid this brick throughout our kitchen and dining. Did you use a sealant? If so, which brand/type?
ReplyDeleteThanks so much!
Yay! That is so exciting! We did seal our brick with 511 Impregnator. It's pretty popular and you can get at most home improvement stores. I'd love to see pictures of your project.
DeleteThanks so much for your reply! Have you had any problems with brick particles and clay being tracked around the house using this sealant? Sorry for all the questions...trying to decide between this sealant and an acrylic one. AS you probably know the acrylic will change the look and I am not a fan of that idea :) Thanks!
DeleteI don't mind the questions at all. Initially we had some grains of sand or tiny pebble like particles from the mortar they used, but that is it. I'd say it was gone within a month of regular household cleaning. It stressed me out a little because I didn't want my wood floors getting ruined from little sand particles, but it's fine. I'd use this sealer again, however I'm not sure for a kitchen area? Maybe the acrylic one might be better? I used what the mason recommended and didn't consider any other options.
DeleteI love your cabinetry. Was that in the house or did you do that?
ReplyDeleteWe had that built in the same time we did the flooring, as well as the planking.
DeleteWould love to know the paint color of those cabinets! Beautiful floor!
ReplyDeleteIt's actually what the builder used throughout my house for trim work. I didn't want to have everything repainted and it's a nice warm white. It's called Swiss Coffee :)
DeleteLiz! AMAZING! Just found you on pinterest and love everything about this room... from the planking to the beautiful built in cabinets to this brick floor I'm obsessed with. We are building a home and I am wanting to put similar brick floors in our Kitchen and Laundry Room. I read that you sealed the brick... but am wondering if you ever installed them in your kitchen and how well they hold up with spills? Bricks are so porous but maybe the sealant works well to keep liquids out! So glad to have come across your site and this amazing room you have put together- loved the finished product on the other post as well. Thanks so much!
ReplyDeleteWhat a fantastic project! I'll be linking to it on our Flooring pinboard. Check it out at pinterest.com/homedepot.
